Gianluca Volpe's research activity is focused on long term trends in Primary Productivity in the Mediterranean Sea and their significance in relation to relevant uncertainties such as that on the chlorophyll concentration. Ocean colour remote sensing of the basin is therefore an important task of his research. In situ bio-optical relationships on a regional scale together with the understanding of the atmospheric correction impact on the retrieval of the ocean colour constitute the main topics of his ongoing research work.

Since June 2005 – PhD Student at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. Thesis: “Can significant long-term trends in primary productivity be measured in the Mediterranean?”; supervisors: Prof. Ian S. Robinson, Dr. Paolo Cipollini
August 2002 - International Summer School on Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences: Remote Sensing of the Earth’s Environment from TERRA, l’Aquila Italy.
December 2001 – Italian Laurea in Marine Environmental Sciences, (5 years degree), Università “Phartenope” Neaples, Italy. Degree Thesis title: “Satellite quantification of Saharan dust transport and deposition over the Mediterranean Sea during the year 2000 and its contribution to photosynthetic biomass production in the basin”. Supervisors: Prof. M. Ribera D’Alcalà , Prof. E. Zambianchi.
